Flu Prevention Power Hour – North American Ginseng – Vitamin D
On today’s December 15, 2011 Dr. Oz Show, the opening segment was called the “Power Prevention Hour”. Flu season has arrived, and nobody has time to be sick during the busy Holiday season. Dr. Oz says that you have the power to prevent or greatly reduce your chances of getting sick!
Prevent The Flu
We all know those dreaded symptoms that fall upon us on the
onset of the flu virus. Chills, fever, body aches, nausea, etc… We are entering the peak flu season so now is a great time to take some steps to guard yourself from getting the flu!
The flu can be a deadly illness. Dr. Oz gave the startling fact that 500,000 people die from the flu around the world every year. The flu virus is constantly mutating which is why it is so hard for scientists to come up with a vaccine. 1000’s of American’s died of the swine flu virus and this year it is uncertain as to what strain will hit us this year.
Dr. Oz said that the winter season spreads the flu so rampantly because the air is dry and cold. The flu virus survives for much longer periods of time under these conditions. So, what can you do to protect yourself from getting the flu this year?
Dr. Oz had on a guest physician from Yale prevention center named David Katz. Dr. Oz asked him why it’s so important to prevent the flu. Katz said that there are already 7 new cases of a brand new strain called H3N2. It is a cause for concern because it is a strain where the swine and human flu have mutated together. This is a strain that our immune system can’t defend against very well. David Katz, said this is what spawns pandemics.
How To Prevent The Flu
Supercharge Your Flu Shot – David Katz said that there is some exciting new research that shows exercising the arm that will receive a flu shot will increase the antibodies made from the vaccination. So on the day that you will be receiving your shot, exercise that arm to the point where you feel the burn. It increases blood flow and the shot will be more effective!
North American Ginseng
Dr. Oz said that he was introduced to this flu prevention idea from a hockey player from Canada. The man told Dr. Oz that they use this remedy routinely in Canada to help prevent them from catching the flu. Dr. Katz said that there indeed has been studies that show we can prevent the cold and flu. He said that North American Ginseng is effective in this regard. He said to take 200 MG daily from December through March you will greatly reduce your chances of catching the flu.
Double Your Vitamin D
David Katz said that during winter we our out in the sunlight less so our bodies don’t produce enough Vitamin D. During the flu season when we need Vitamin D the most, our bodies are making less. Dr. Katz recommends taking 2000 mg of vitamin D daily throughout the flu season and 1000 mg a day throughout the rest of the year. He said that Vitamin D is safe for children to take but you should scale down the doses accordingly.
